Maize (Zea mays) is one of the world’s most important food, green forage, and industrial crops. It serves as a staple food for billions of people, a source of animal feed, and even contributes to various industrial products, which is why its also called as the Queen Of The Cereals. Maize also has the highest yield per hectare among all the cereal crops.
Maize cultivation is a rewarding journey that requires careful attention to detail at every stage, from seed selection to harvest. By choosing the right maize varieties, preparing your soil, and implementing effective management techniques, you can unleash the golden potential of your maize crop. Let’s explore what maize crops need in a field in terms of nutrition and protection.
The tropical plant maize prefers warm, humid conditions. It is grown in several parts of the world, from tropical to temperate regions, under incredibly diverse climatic conditions. Although maize can be cultivated on a range of soils, it grows best on those with good drainage and that are sufficiently fertilized by manures. Sandy loam and deep black silt loam are the best soil types for growing maize.
During Land Preparation, add 200-250 ml of BIO NPK with FYM or vermicomposting 10-20 days prior to sowing.
To control seed- and soil-borne diseases, treat the seeds with Biocontrol agents like Trichoderma viride or Trichoderma harzianum at 4g/kg.
At the time of Germination and Establishment, apply 0.5- 1kg/acre of Crop Tiger, as this product is a blend of kelp extract, amino acids, and multivitamins. It will increase the plant’s tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. With the Crop Tiger, also apply Copper Amino Acid 12%, Ferrous Amino Acid 12% and Manganese Amino Acid 12% at 200-250gm/acre to promote chlorophyll and protein synthesis.
During the Vegetative Stage, foliar spraying with BIO NPK at 500-750 ml/acre will improve the vegetation, quality, appearance, size, and growth of maize. Micronutrients play an imperative role in plant growth and development, enhancing the formation of the cell wall, sugar transport, chlorophyll production, and photosynthesis processes. During vegetation growth, apply Zinc Oxide 39.5% SC at 1-2 ml/l, Liquid Calcium 11% SC at 3.5-5 ml/l, Soluble Sulphur with Calcium at 1-2ml/ l, Ferrous Amino Acid at 1-2 ml/l, or foliar spray with Aminofert MMF at 2-2.5 ml/l.
At the Flowering Stage, apply Soluble Silica with Potassium at 3-4 ml/l to enhance reproduction by improving pollination and increasing pollen fertility. Soluble Silica with Potassium also provides resistance to mineral stress and reduces the lodging problem.
During Grain Formation, apply Aminofert Gold at 2-3 gm/l or Aminofert MMF at 2-2.5 ml/l. It helps in providing the required nutrients. It is essential for the apical growth of the grain.
Crop protection from major insects and diseases:
Disease/Insect | Management |
Maydis leaf blight (MLB)/ Southern Corn Leaf Blight (SCLB) | Foliar spray of Trichoderma viride at 5gm/l. |
Turcicum leaf blight (TLB)/ Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB) | Seed treatment with Trichoderma harzianum at 6g per kg of seeds is recommended before sowing. |
Curvularia leaf spot | Seed Treatment with 20 g of Trichoderma harzianum formulation per kg of seed. |
Common rust | Foliar application with Bacillus subtilis and Trichoderma harzianum |
Pink stem borer | At the infestation, apply Bacillus thuringiensis (400g/acre) at 5g/l with Metarhizium anisopliae or Beauveria bassiana (1 kg/acre) at 5g/l of water |
Fall Armyworm | At the infestation, apply Bacillus thuringiensis (400g/acre) at 5g/l with Metarhizium anisopliae or Beauveria bassiana (1 kg/acre) at 5g/l of water |
Shoot fly | Treat with 5g/l of Metarhizium anisopliae or Beauveria bassiana (1 kg/acre) at 5g/l of water |
