Fungicides

What are Fungicides and why crops need them

Fungicides are products used to control fungal diseases in crops. Fungal attacks can show in many forms like small spots on leaves, white powder on the surface, rotting of stems, molds on fruits. They can spread very fast if not treated in time. A Fungicide can stop the fungus from growing, kill the spores, or protect the healthy parts of the plant so infection does not spread. They are especially important during wet seasons or in places with high humidity where fungal diseases become more serious.

Fungal infection is not just about appearance of the crop. It can reduce yield and damage quality from inside. In grains it can cause poor grain filling. In fruits it can lead to shrivelling and poor shelf life. Some fungi attack the roots and slow down nutrient uptake. Others travel through water, wind or even through wounds made by insects. If fungicides are used at the correct stage, the crop is saved from major losses. This means the plant can focus its energy on growing and producing rather than fighting the disease.

Why timing matters

Many times growers cannot see the disease at the early stage. That is why protective sprays are as important as curative sprays. A protective spray prevents the fungus from even starting to grow. A curative spray stops it after it has already started spreading. In crops like paddy, wheat, grapes, chilli, or onion, using Fungicides regularly at certain stages is part of the normal crop management schedule.

Where they are used

Fungicides are applied in many types of crops. Field crops like rice, wheat, maize and soybean need them during tillering and flowering stages to avoid leaf and grain diseases. Vegetables like tomato, brinjal, cabbage, chilli, and cucurbits face problems like blight, mildew, and damping off. Fruit crops like grapes, banana, papaya, and pomegranate require sprays to protect from downy mildew, anthracnose and rots that can happen after harvest. Even pulses and oilseeds benefit from seed treatments and timely foliar sprays to prevent fungal damage.
