Plant Growth Regulators
What are Plant Growth Regulators
Plant Growth Regulators, commonly called PGRs, are special chemical substances which can change how a plant grows and develops. They are not like fertilizers or nutrients which feed the plant. Instead, they guide the plant on how to use the food and energy it already has. Some PGRs make the plant grow more branches, more roots, better flowering, or uniform fruit setting. Others slow down growth when needed, like controlling excessive leaves or preventing flowers and fruits from falling too early.
The way they work is by mimicking or blocking the natural plant hormones that already exist inside the plant. These hormones include auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene and abscisic acid. Each one plays its own role. For example, auxins help root growth, gibberellins stretch the plant and make it grow taller, cytokinins promote cell division, ethylene controls ripening and ABA is involved in stress response.
Why PGRs are used
Growers use PGRs when they need more control on how the crop behaves. For example, in cotton or mango, sometimes the plant grows too many leaves and shoots, which takes away energy from fruits or bolls. Using a growth retardant can stop unnecessary leaf growth and send that energy to fruit production. In sugarcane, gibberellic acid helps push faster cane elongation and thicker stems. In grapes and pomegranate, certain PGRs make the berries bigger, more uniform and attractive for the market.
Using PGR is not about guess work. The timing, crop stage, and correct dose are very important. A wrong spray can harm the crop, but the right spray shows clear, visible and predictable results.
Crops that respond well
PGRs work well in many crops like sugarcane, cotton, paddy, banana, grapes, mango, citrus, tomato and even in flowers. High value crops for export or protected cultivation respond even better. They are also used in nurseries and during transplanting to make young plants stronger and help them establish faster in the field.
