Bacillus thuringiensis

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a species of bacteria that lives in soil. Bacillus thuringiensis is widely used in agriculture for the control of insect pests. The bacterium produces an endotoxin which is found in a crystalline inclusion. In addition to the toxic factor, other proteins are involved in invasion of the host and blocking the host’s immune defences. The proteins are not toxic to all mammals; it cannot get activated in the mammalian system.

CFU:

NLT 1X108 CFU/gram

Mode of Action:

Bacillus thuringiensis produces the Crystal (Cry) and Cytolytic (Cyt) protein families are a diverse group of proteins with activity against insects of different orders-Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera and also against other invertebrates such as nematodes. Their primary action is to lyse midgut epithelial cells by inserting into the target membrane and forming pores.

Benefits:

  • Reduced reliance on chemical insecticides, made Bt protected crops an obvious choice for product development highly effective pest control.
  • It is highly specific and does not show any adverse effects on humans and animals.
  • supplemental pest control by preserving or enhancing populations of beneficial organisms.
  • Helps in increasing the yield of the crops without any infestation.
